Visiting Mayberry

 Mount Airy is the childhood home of the late Andy Griffith. I don't think there's a baby boomer in the country that hasn't seen every episode of the "Andy Griffth Show" airing from 1960 to 1968.
Some time ago, on our way to the beach, we stopped at Mount Airy, North Carolina. A cute little town that makes you think that you've been transported to Mayberry.




Floyd's Barber Shop - You can get your haircut while you listen to Floyd's stories about Mayberry.
The Snappy Lunch - Where Andy and Barnie would grab lunch. But you can too! They are famous for the pork chop sandwich with chili, cole slaw, mustard, onion and tomato on top!

Sheriff Taylor's desk...
and the jail cell where Ottis spent many a night!
Take a tour of the town in a police car...


You can even stay overnight in Andy's childhood home!
"Mayberry days" take place every September in Mt. Airy. This year's special guest was actress Betty Lynn, age 91, better known as Thelma Lou...Barney's girlfriend on the show!

    Suzy, I'd love to go there! One of my favorite episodes was when Helen Crump came to town and was Opie's new teacher. He went home complaining about Old Lady Crump, so Andy was surprised to find that she was young and attractive. She became his girlfriend, and Thelma Lou was Barney's girl.

    How fun! I didn't know anything about Mount Airy, and I'm so glad you shared it. Our family has been watching a little bit of Andy Griffith, and my Littles love it. Even my Middles enjoy watching (16 and 18). It did take a bit of time for my 8-year-old to adjust to watching the "Gray Show", as she calls it. It would be really fun to visit Mount Airy next time we head to North Carolina to visit my oldest daughter and family. Thanks for sharing it!

    Those were simpler times, weren't they! What a fun trip that must have been. We have a daughter in North Carolina. We'll have to check it out the next time we visit.

    I've been through Mount Airy but never stopped for the grand tour. It looks like it would be fun! A bit of nostalgia seems very attractive just now.

    I certainly want to visit Mt. Airy! I'd probably hum the show's theme song as I walked around town. :-) The statue of Andy and Opie is so cool.

    Suzy - I have not visited there, but it sure looks homey. I am a little too young to appreciate the Andy Griffith Show, but not too young to wish we could return to those simpler days! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

    I love Andy Griffith and Mayberry. As a NC Native we all love him, he was such a character.

    Yup, we visited there. It was Smiles all around town! Thanks for the memories (We were full-time RVers for over ten years. There were things we planned to see and did and that was wonderful, but then there were also the surprises we stumbled on and those will always be special. Mt Airy is a good example of the latter! )
