Thrifty Craft Room Storage

Recently, my sister was spring cleaning and boxing up donations for the Salvation Army. As she was putting things in, I was pulling stuff out and thinking of ways to re-use it ! This spice rack was just perfect for tiny items like
brads, tiny paper clips, sequins, etc... all the little stuff that tends to get lost in the shuffle. This has really been handy with my card making!

A shoe bag hung on the back of my craft room door is great to make supplies easy to find and easy to grab...and I don't forget that I have them!!

I saw the next two on Pinterest and thought they were clever...
and a new use for a shower rack
Tell me about your ways to reuse household items for storage.

Stuffed Cabbage Casserole

Stuffed Cabbage Casserole

1 large onion, chopped

2 lb.lean ground beef

1/2 cup brown rice (cooked)

1 large head cabbage, chopped

2 cups tomato soup

1/4 cup vinegar

1/8 cup Splenda (or less)

mozzarella cheese, if desired

Brown the meat and drain any fat. Add salt, pepper, onion, and rice. Spray a 13 x 9 dish with Pam. Spread half of the cabbage in the dish. Top with meat mixture. Spread the remaining cabbage over the meat and flatten. Mix soup, vinegar and Splenda and 3/4 cup of water. Pour over casserole. Cover with foil and bake 1 and 1/2 hours @ 350 degrees. If desired, remove foil and  top with mozzarella cheese for the last 15 minutes. Serves eight.

This is an old W.W. recipe. It is also acceptable for Southbeach - phase 2.
Not on a diet? You can use sugar in place of the Splenda.

This is really tasty, and no cabbage leaves to roll!

My Garden Lady

Some have a scarecrow in their garden...I prefer my garden lady!
Here's where I got the idea. A local farm always has a Mr. and Mrs. Scarecrow that they dress differently every summer. Each year, I wait to see how they will be dressed for the new season...
So back in 2014, I decided to make myself a garden Lady!
Jack made me a cross shape with a 2x4 to go in the ground and a thin lightweight board to form a "T" at the top. I made the face out of a styrofoam disc covered with Spanish moss.

I secured the moss with floral wire and left the ends long enough to go around the wood stake. I bought a straw hat for $1.25 and wired on some flowers from my craft stash. Her dress was made from a $2.00 shower curtain from the thrift store.

By the end of summer, the Blue jays had taken string and moss,

The squirrels had eaten her hat and destroyed her dress! lol
but I wasn't giving up.

The next year this was her ensemble!
She lasted nearly all summer before the deer ate her hat!

The last two years, this has been her outfit. Other than some fading, the hat and dress have survived!!

But I think a bird is building a nest in her face!!!

Mrs. Klein's Baked Beans

Several years ago when we lived in upstate New York, the church we were attending created a member cookbook. You've heard me say before that I just love those recipes... common ingredients that I can pronounce!
Well, my mom was so pleased when the cookbook included her baked bean recipe!

Mrs. Klein's Baked Beans

1 small onion, chopped
3 slices bacon
2 large cans of pork and beans
2 Tablespoons molasses
3 Tablespoons ketchup
2 Tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon dry mustard

Directions:
Fry together onion and bacon. Drain and crumble the bacon. Add the remaining ingredients to the onion - bacon mixture. Cook slowly until done.

Note:
I've made these in the crock pot too!

LUCY, I'M HOME!

Celoron, N.Y. is the hometown of the "First Lady of Comedy"...Lucille Ball.
It's a small town near Jamestown, N.Y. We visited there this past spring and the whole town is dedicated to her.

 They are Lucy crazy!!

Huge photo billboards all over town,

a Lucy- Desi Museum, (that was great)

Desilu Studios that was part of the tour,

One of the displays was a magazine advertisement saying in the 50's you could buy a bedroom suite just like the one  Lucy and Desi had on the show!

Every year there is a Lucille Ball Comedy Festival.

These huge murals were on parking garages.

This is Lucy's childhood home. It was open for tours for many years but now is a private residence. The video below was made by the present owners:

In the video, notice the unusual painting of the garage doors,
painted like the dress we all remember!

The town park has a statue that was donated by a local family. A few years ago, there was a lot of talk about how the town wanted it removed because they thought it didn't look like Lucy, but it's still there!

If you ever get the chance, it's worth the visit!
