George was only 8 years old when his father passed away, leaving Mrs. Eastman alone to raise several Children. George's mother took in boarders to support her family and George dropped out of school at age 14 to help out. He was not a gifted boy but was able to get a job as an office boy at a local insurance agency. He later became a bookkeeper at the Rochester Bank.
When he was 24, he became interested in photography and found the equipment was very heavy to use and costly. In 1888, he invented his first camera using a roll system to instead of glass plates.
What does the name "Kodak" stand for? nothing! George made it up because he wanted a word that was associated with nothing else and had it's own identity. He invented the Brownie camera in 1900 with a $1.00 price tag. It became very popular with serviceman and children.
The company slogan became "You push the button and we do the rest"
In all, it is estimated the Eastman Contributed more than $100 million of his wealth for philanthropic purposes during his lifetime. He established the prestigious Eastman School of Music in 1921 and the Eastman Dental College
He never married and built the home for himself and his ailing mother. In later years he suffered from severe diabetes and a spinal cord condition. So on March 14, 1932, at age 77, he took his own life with a single gunshot to the heart.
He left a note saying "My work is done, why wait?"
