George Eastman ~ KODAK

Recently, My hubby and I drove to Rochester, New York, to visit the area where we lived for four years. While we were there, we toured the home of George Eastman...The creator of Kodak.

A beautiful home built in 1905-1907

George was only 8 years old when his father passed away, leaving Mrs. Eastman alone to raise several Children. George's mother took in boarders to support her family and George dropped out of school at age 14 to help out. He was not a gifted boy but was able to get a job as an office boy at a local insurance agency. He later became a bookkeeper at the Rochester Bank.

When he was 24, he became interested in photography and found the equipment was very heavy to use and costly. In 1888, he invented his first camera using a roll system to instead of glass plates.

What does the name "Kodak" stand for?   nothing!  George made it up because he wanted a word that was associated with nothing else and had it's own identity. He invented the Brownie camera in 1900 with a $1.00 price tag. It became very popular with serviceman and children.

The company slogan became "You push the button and we do the rest"

In all, it is estimated the Eastman Contributed more than $100 million of his wealth for philanthropic purposes during his lifetime. He established the prestigious Eastman School of Music in 1921 and the Eastman Dental College. Both are still in existence today.

He never married and built the home for himself and his ailing mother. In later years he suffered from severe diabetes and a spinal cord condition. So on March 14, 1932, at age 77, he took his own life with a single gunshot to the heart.
He left a note saying "My work is done, why wait?"

Valentine Tree

I love the way the Christmas lights brighten the house during the dark days of  winter. The first thing I do when I come in from work is plug in all the holiday lights and enjoy the sparkle!

So when the week after New Years comes around, packing everything away has always been a let down for me. The house always seems so empty and dark in January.
This year, I decided to leave the green garlands with clear lights on the stair railings up a little longer, and I turned my Christmas tree......

into a Valentine tree!!

Someone in my family, that I refer to as the "QVC queen", bought these beautiful glass and metallic hearts for her tree. She decided that they were too large for her small tree and offered them to me. I gladly accepted!
This way, I can enjoy the sparkle a little longer!

Low Carb Stuffed Cabbage Casserole

This easy casserole is a great comfort food during the long, cold winter!

If you love cabbage rolls but don't like the work that goes with them...boiling the cabbage leaves, the filling, the rolling, ...then try this easy recipe that doesn't fall short on the flavor of traditional cabbage rolls:

Low Carb Stuffed Cabbage Casserole

1 large onion, chopped

2 # lean ground beef

1/2 cup brown rice (cooked)

1 large head cabbage, chopped

2 cups tomato soup

1/4 cup vinegar

1/8 cup Splenda ( or sugar, if desired)

Brown the meat. Drain any fat. Add salt, pepper, onion, and cooked rice. Spray a 13 x 9 dish with Pam. Spread half of the cabbage in the dish. Top with meat mixture. Spread the remaining cabbage over the meat and flatten. Mix soup, vinegar and Splenda and 3/4 cup of water. Pour over casserole. Tightly cover with foil and bake 1 and 1/2 hours @ 350 degrees. Serves eight.

This is an old W.W. recipe that is also acceptable for Southbeach - phase 2.

Not on a diet? You can use sugar in place of the Splenda.

This is really tasty, and no cabbage leaves to roll!!
