LABELS

Lookin' back...

Decades ago, when I was in high school, I went to Cosmetology School  nights and weekends in a nearby town. When I was lucky enough to get tips, a quarter here or a nickel there, I would go and have lunch at the little luncheonette across the alley from the back of the school. They made a sandwich there they called the "Skyburger".
(Hamburger, fries and a soft drink for $1.00 was the special)

A hamburger on toasted white bread, topped with american cheese and slice of sweet onion. Add another slice of toast and a fried egg, (over medium) and mayo. Top with a third slice of toast.

After all these years I still remember how much I liked this...Think I'll have one for lunch today.

  3. SUZY, I'M QUITE CERTAIN THAT YOU NEVER VISITED A BUSINESS CALLED 'THE NICKEL SANDWICH SYSTEM'. IT WAS THERE IN THE 1930s.
    MOST LARGER CITIES HAD THEM.

ANOTHER PLACE WE OLD COUNTRY BOYS LOVED TO VISIT IN TULSA THE FEW TIMES GETTING TO GO THE FORTY FIVE MILES, NEAR THE FARMER'S MARKET WAS 'WALKER'S CAFE'. FAMILY STYLE MEAL TWENTY FIVE CENTS. DRINKS AND DESERTS INCLUDED.
OPERATED BY A PHILANTHROPIST THAT HIRED A MANAGER THAT RECEIVED DONATED VEGETABLES AND FRUIT FROM THE FARMERS RENTING THE FARMER'S MARKET STALLS.
THE YOUNG FOLKS WORKING IN THE CAFE WERE HAPPY WITH THE JOB, A DOLLAR A DAY AND FREE MEALS.
THE 'GREAT DEPRESSION WAS IN FULL SWING, DUST STORMS, DROUTH AND HORDES OF GRASSHOPPERS. IF PERCHANCE THESE THINGS HAPPEN AGAIN, YOUNG FOLKS WILL AGAIN PROVE THEIE METTLE. sam
